PLANTATION STUDY
GUIDE
Who were the immigrants and why were they needed?
*7 major groups came
-Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, Puerto Ricans, Okinawans, Koreans and Filipinos
*Groups were needed for 5 reasons
-They were considered cheap labor (worked for little pay)
-Loss of Hawaiian workers due to diseases
-Demand for sugar increased
-Chinese had experience refining sugar
-Able to control multiple groups by isolating them in the plantation
What was the assimilation experience that the groups
experienced?
*Assimilation is when the minority or lesser group tries to become a part of the larger group
*Pidgin created because it was hard for the workers and lunas (supervisors) to communicate with one another
-Pidgin was a mixture of the different languages put together
-Everyone could now communicate and work (orders were only given once instead of multiple times)
-Created from English, Chinese, Japanese and Portuguese
-Helped the lunas or foreman in charge
What was the inequity experience that immigrant groups
experienced?
*Inequity is the act of being unfair
*Pay and type of jobs are 2 examples of inequity
-Workers were paid differently even though they did the same job
+Filipino cane cutters 69 cents and Japanese cane cutters had 99 cents
+American carpenters got 4.36 and Japanese got 1.28
+American overseers earned $3.01 to the Japanese overseers who earned $1.25
-The supervisory jobs given to people who had whiter skin (Europeans and Americans)
+41 mill engineers were European/Americans, 1 was Japanese, 1 Hawaiian and 2 were Part-Hawaiian
+Overseers: 313 of 377 were white
-People couldnÕt go far if skin color wasnÕt white
*1904, Hawaiian Sugar PlanterÕs Association limited supervisory position to those that were American citizens
*What was the Cultural Diffusion that the immigrants
experienced?
*Cultural diffusion is the spreading of ideas, traditions, practices, etc.
-Food and traditions mainly spread
+Food: Chinese bao and char siu, Japanese sushi, rice cakes, tofu, and musubi, Korean Kim Chee, Filipino adobo, Portuguese sausage and sweet bread
+Traditions: Chinese New Year, Japanese Obon and EmperorÕs Birthday
+Miscellaneous: sumo, chicken fights, firecrakcrs shamisens (stringed instrument)
